Artist Statement
My approach to art is that of a spiritual discipline—a physical act of prayer. As often as possible, I try to use the same materials used by medieval artists, which tend to be environmentally friendly as they are drawn directly from nature. These are more than just copies of old works; they are new works inspired by an ancient tradition. These ancient prayers, hymns, and teachings hold such a depth of wisdom that can still inspire sacred art over a thousand years later. Making art with traditional materials is like joining a choir with ten thousand voices all singing the same song.
My work includes multiple media: egg tempera on gesso panels, glair and watercolor on paper and vellum, and calligraphy. The paints and inks I use are natural, and locally-sourced when possible, which produce gentle hues that are conducive to prayer and meditation. While there is a time and place for art which confronts and accuses, my art challenges the ugliness of injustice by drawing upon ancient traditions of pattern and prayer to create works which radiate goodness, truth, and beauty.
“Let my prayer arise in Thy sight as incense, and let the lifting up of my hands be an evening sacrifice” (Psalm 141:2).
